How to Enable iPhone Push Notifications

How to Enable iPhone Push Notifications

enable push notifications on iphone -
Forget needing to check your apps manually to figure out whether something has happened in them that you need to pay attention to. These days, apps are smart enough to send you notifications that there's something you need to check out. These alerts, called push notifications, can show up as badges on app icons, sounds, or messages that pop up on your iOS device's home or lock screens. This article explains how to configure and use them.

Push Notification Requirements

In order to use push notifications, you'll need:
  • An iPhone or iPod touch (technically it needs to be running iOS 3.0 or higher, but that's pretty much everyone in the world these days)
  • Apps that support push notifications
  • A web connection (3G/4G or Wi-Fi)
While push works on many versions of the iOS, this tutorial assumes you're running iOS 8.

How to Enable and Configure Push Notifications

You don't need to enable push notifications—they're enabled by default as part of the iOS. All you need to do is choose which apps you want to get notifications from and what type of alerts they send. Here's how to do that:
  1. Tap the Settings app to open it
  2. Tap Notifications
  3. On this screen, you'll see all the apps installed on your phone that support push. Each app's settings have to be managed separately, so scroll down to one you want to work with and tap it
  4. On this screen, your first option is whether you want to Allow Notifications from this app. If you do, move the slider to On/green, if not move it to Off/white
  5. The next option is to determine if notifications from the app will Show in Notification Center (more on what that is in a moment). Tap that menu and on the next screen tap your choice (none, 1, 5, or 10). Tap Phone in the top left corner to return to the previous screen
  6. In the Notification Sound menu, you can select the ringtone or alert tone that plays whenever you get a notification from this app. This is optional; you don't have to hear a sound at all. Tap the menu and make your selection. Some apps—such as Phone, Mail, Messages, and Calendar—allow you to configure different sounds for different email accounts, calendar event types, etc.
  7. The Badge App Icon determine whether a red number appears on the app icon when it has notifications for you. This can be helpful to see what needs attention, but not everyone may like it. Move the slider to On/green to use it, Off/white to disable it
  8. The Show in Lock Screen option lets you control whether notifications will show on your phone's screen even when it's locked. You may want this for things that need immediate attention, such as voicemail messages and calendar events, but may prefer to disable it for more personal or sensitive information
Choose From Dozens Of Downloadable Games - Always All Free, Get App!
  9. In the Alert Style When Unlocked box, you'll control what the notification alerts look like when your phone is not locked. Tap the one you prefer:
    1. None—pretty self-explanatory. You won't see any notifications
    2. Banners—short messages at the top of your screen that disappear after a few seconds
    3. Alerts—pop up windows in the center of the screen that you need to interact with to dismiss.
With those choices made, you've configured push notifications for that app. You'll need to repeat the process for any other app whose notifications you want to customize.

Controlling AMBER and Emergency Alerts

At the bottom of the Notifications screen, there are two other sliders that allow you to control your alert preferences:
  • AMBER Alerts—These are alerts issued by law enforcement during child abductions and related emergencies
  • Emergency Alerts—Alerts related to severe weather or other major safety-related events.
You can choose to leave them both on, off, or have a mix by moving the sliders to the settings you prefer.

What is Notification Center?

Notification alerts don't just appear on your home and lock screens. Depending on the settings you choose, they can also appear in their own dedicated area of the iPhone: Notification Center.
Learn all about Notification Center.

Notification Center Widgets

In iOS 8 and above, Notification Center supports the embedding of mini-apps to provide immediate, basic functionality directly from the pull-down.
How to Reset or Restart Any iPod nano Model

How to Reset or Restart Any iPod nano Model

7th generation iPod nano - image copyright Apple Inc.
Even though it doesn't look much like a desktop or laptop computer, the iPod nano is essentially a small computer. And, just like a regular computer, sometimes it freezes up and needs to be restarted. If you've got a frozen iPod nano that isn't responding to clicks and isn't playing music, it probably needs a reset the same way a desktop computer would (in fact, when trying to solve virtually any problem with an iPod nano, your first step should be a restart. You'd be surprised how often that solves the problem). Luckily, it's easy to reset an iPod nano.

How to Reset the 7th Gen. iPod nano

The 7th generation iPod nano is the only nano that offers features like its multitouch screen, Bluetooth support, and a Home button. The way you reset it is also unique. Luckily, reseting the 7th generation nano will be very familiar if you've used an iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad.
  1. Press and hold the Hold button (in the top right corner) until a progress wheel appears on the screen.
  2. The screen will go dark, but keep holding.
  3. In another few seconds, the Apple logo will appear. You can let go now; the nano is restarting.

How to Restart the 6th Gen. iPod nano

If you need to restart your 6th gen. nano, follow these steps:
  1. Hold down both the Sleep/Wake button (the one on the top right) and the Volume Down button (the one of the far left). You'll need to do this for 8-10 seconds.
  2. The screen will go dark as the nano restarts.
  3. When you see the Apple logo, you can let go; the nano is starting up again.

How to Reset 1st-5th Gen. iPod nano

Reseting these early iPod nano models is similar to the technique used for the 6th gen. model, though the buttons you use are slightly different.

The first thing you should do is to make sure that your iPod's hold button isn't on. This is the little switch at the top of the iPod nano that you can "lock" the iPod's buttons. When you lock the nano, it won't respond to clicks, which can make it appear to be frozen. You'll know that the hold button is on when you see a little orange area at the top of the iPod nano and a lock icon on its screen. If you see either of these indicators, move the switch back and see if this fixes the problem.
If the nano isn't locked or moving the switch doesn't fix i:
  1. Slide the hold switch to the On position (so that the orange appears) and then move it back to Off.
  2. Hold down both the Menu button on the clickwheel and the center button at the same time. Press them for 6-10 seconds. This should reset the iPod nano. You'll know the nano is restarting when the screen darkens and then the Apple logo appears.
  3. If this doesn't work the first time, repeat the steps and try resetting the nano again.
  4. If a second or third reset doesn't solve your problem, try plugging your iPod nano into a power source (your computer or a wall outlet) and let it charge. Then repeat the steps.
  5. If after all this, your nano still doesn't work, you may have a bigger problem, and ought to contact Apple to get more help.
How To Categorize and Edit iTunes Song Info

How To Categorize and Edit iTunes Song Info

edit itunes song info -
In most cases, songs copied from CD to iTunes be imported with all their metadata (a name for information about the song, like artist, album, genre, and year). The metadata is useful for obvious things like knowing the name of the song that's playing, but iTunes also uses it for categorizing music, knowing when two songs are part of the same album, and for certain settings for syncing iPhones and iPods. Needless to say, even though most people don't think much about it, it's pretty important.

While songs will usually have all the metadata you need, in some cases, this information either may be missing, or could be wrong and you'll want to change it. To do that, you'll have to edit the song's metadata (also known as ID3 tags) using iTunes. Here's how.

  1. Open iTunes and highlight the song or songs you want to edit by clicking on it once. To highlight a group of songs, click the song at the top of the list you want to change, then hold down the Shift key and click the song at the bottom of the list. This will highlight all the songs in between.
  2. Once you have selected the song or songs you want to edit, do the following:

  • Go to the File menu
  • Select Get Info about halfway down the menu
Alternatively, you can also use keyboard commands to open the Get Info window. Select the song or songs you want to edit and then, on a Mac click Command + I;  on a PC, click Control + I.

For a third method: Right clicking, or holding down Control when clicking, pops up a menu that you can select Get Info from, too.

  1. Whichever method you selected, this pops up the Get Info window that lists all of the song's metadata. In this window, you can edit virtually any information about the song or songs (the actual fields you edit are the ID3 tags). The Summary tab, the first one displayed, shows the album art associated with the song or album, the track name and length, artist and album name, and various other information about the song. This tab has been removed in iTunes 12 and replaced with the File tab. See item 9 below for more information.
  2. The Info or Details tab is perhaps the most common place to edit iTunes song info. Here you can edit song name, artist, album, year, genre, star rating, and more. Simply click on the content you want to add or edit and begin typing to make your changes.
    • In iTunes 12, there's an Add Field drop down on the Details tab. Clicking this will allow you to add some additional metadata to the song that's not included by default.
  3. The Artwork tabs shows the album art associated with the song. You can add new art by clicking the "Add" (or "Add Artwork" depending on your version of iTunes) button and selecting image files on your hard drive. Alternatively, you can use iTunes' built-in album art downloading tool to add available art to all the songs and albums in your library.
  4. The Lyrics tab is where you can copy and paste in lyrics to the song, if you have them. ITunes doesn't have a built-in lyrics tool, but there are numerous websites that provide this easily copy and pastable lyrics.
  5. The Options tab lets use control the volume of the song, automatically apply an equalizer setting, give or edit a star rating, and determine the start and stop time of the song. Click the Skip when shuffling box to prevent the song from appearing in Up Next or a shuffle playback.
  6. The Sorting tab determines how the song, artist, and album show up in your iTunes library when it's sorted by those criteria.
For instance, a song might include a guest star in its Artist ID3 tag. This would make it appear in iTunes as separate from the album it's a part of (e.g., Willie Nelson and Merle Haggard would show up as a separate artist with a separate album, even though the song is from a Willie Nelson album). But, if you add the artist and album name to the Sort Artist and Sort Album fields, all the songs from the album will show up in the same album view without permanently changing the original ID3 tag.

  7. The File tab, which is a new addition in iTunes 12, provides the information that the Summary tab used to offer about song time, file type, bit rate, purchase information, and more.
  8. The arrow key at the bottom left of the window in iTunes 12 move from one song to the next, either forward or backward, so you can edit more song data.
  9. The Video tab is only used to edit videos in your iTunes library, not songs. Use the fields here to group episodes the same season of a TV show together.
  10. When you're done making the edits you want, click OK at the bottom of the window. If you want to edit the next song listed in your iTunes library, click the "Next" button.
NOTE: If you're editing a group of songs, you'll only be able to make changes that apply to all the songs. For instance, you can change the name of the album or artist or the genre of a group of songs. You can't, however, select a group of songs and then try to change just one song name, because you're editing a group.
